LLAGNY’s Graphic Novel Book Group was hosted by the New York Law Institute on May 13th via WebEx. We discussed Akira, Vol 1 and A Different Pond by Bao Phi . The books are very different from each other.

We did not spend much time discussing Akira, which is set in post- apocalyptic Tokyo.  The manga cyberpunk graphic novel depicts teen motorcycle gangs, paranormal appearances/disappearances, secret military psychic research, and an anti-government terrorist group. I for one often felt I was lost and needed more of a back story.

A Different Pond by Bao Phi is a charming story of a father and son catching fish for the family dinner. The story depicts an immigrant family, but more importantly how parents and children bond and create connections to their past. Chris Walunas shared a study guide for the book with the group.

Although this meeting was hosted by the New York Law Institute, we are looking to use LLAGNY’s Zoom for future meetings.
