The New York Law Institute (NYLI) is seeking an accomplished, forward‑thinking Executive Director to lead one of the nation’s oldest membership law libraries into its next century of service. Located in newly renovated offices in Manhattan’s Financial District. NYLI has been a trusted resource to the legal community since 1828, providing critical legal and business information through a robust online platform and a curated print collection, offering expert research services to members. 

Membership law libraries continue to play a vital role in the modern legal information landscape. With several strategic initiatives underway, NYLI is poised for significant evolution. Position Summary

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director holds overall responsibility for developing and executing NYLI’s strategic and business plans, including evaluating the Institute’s physical collection and space needs. The Executive Director will:

  • Collaborate with the Board and members to refine long‑ and short‑term strategic goals that align with evolving user needs.
  • Determine the optimal mix of services and resources to support current members and expand NYLI’s reach to new markets.
  • Ensure the delivery of high‑quality products and services, assessing and adjusting offerings as needed.
  • Lead NYLI’s marketing, communications, training, and engagement initiatives to strengthen member value and visibility.
  • Oversee financial management, ensuring strong internal controls and identifying opportunities to grow and diversify revenue.

Core Operational Responsibilities – This position requires regular presence in the office.

The Executive Director will directly perform or oversee:

  • Budget development and administration for operations and personnel.
  • Pension oversight, required reporting, and negotiation of health and liability insurance policies.
  • Contract and license negotiations for print and electronic resources.
  • Marketing of services to retain existing members and attract new ones.
  • Recruitment, supervision, and development of staff.
  • Development and maintenance of the technology infrastructure supporting NYLI’s services.

Qualifications

  • MLS, JD, MBA, or other relevant advanced degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least five years of experience working in a library, preferably serving legal professionals.
  • Experience with membership organizations and non-profit boards is also a plus.
  • At least ten years of progressively responsible management experience, including strategic planning, financial management, technology oversight, project management, staff supervision, public relations, and contract negotiation.
  • Deep knowledge of legal, business, and general information resources in print and electronic formats.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Salary Range: $180,000 – $220,000 annually (exempt)

The salary range listed reflects the expected compensation for this role in New York. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, education, internal equity, and organizational needs. This position is eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, and professional development opportunities.  This salary range is provided in compliance with New York State and New York City pay transparency laws.
