SLA Speed Networking Event, held the first day of Summer, allowed attendees to explore the many career options of librarianship — public, membership , government, law firm, academic, and art archives were all represented…..

But just what is Speed Networking anyway?

Modeled after speed dating, it’s a structured process that allows introductions and career conversation between people who don’t know each other.

Best practice gurus encourage participants to have their elevator speech — summary of work & educational history as well as future goals – prepared and practiced. And don’t forget to distribute your business cards!

And while at first glance the obvious beneficiary is the party seeking a job or career change, it also gives the mentor a chance to share their work experiences and advocate for their chosen field of work.

As NYLI’s Executive Director Lucy Curci-Gonzalez posted in her LinkedIn comments ..

” As honored to have participated in this wonderful event.  And very happy to have met so many entering our profession and to have shared my experience with them.”

Mentor, participate, network… all ways to advance our career… and our profession….
