AI Is Not the Answer, It’s a Tool

Michel Sahyoun writes for the ABA’s Law Technology Today:

“In legal, as in every other sector, AI has become the expected answer before the question is even fully formed. That’s not because it is necessarily the right fit for the problem at hand, but because hesitation has been reframed as falling behind.

The shift toward an AI-first default didn’t happen by accident. Vendor pressure plays a significant role: AI features have become table stakes in enterprise software pitches, whether or not they add genuine value. Firms that hesitate to adopt are portrayed as being slow on the uptake. No managing partner wants to explain to clients why a firm isn’t “leveraging AI.””
