SUMMARY:Words Have Provenance: Tracing the Evidence Behind Our Language Webinar
DESCRIPTION:What can a dictionary tell you beyond the definition of a word? This 30-minute session will explore how the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) can support legal research by tracing the origins\, meanings\, and historical use of language. \n\n\n\nUsing real examples\, we’ll explore how to discover when words entered the English language\, how their meanings have changed\, and how the OED’s historical quotations and specialized meanings can provide valuable evidence for legal research. We’ll look at examples from trademark\, patent\, and contract law\, including cases in which courts have turned to the OED to help interpret language. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also take a brief look at the OED’s AI Search Assistant and its quarterly Updates\, and how these features can support discovery and current awareness. \n\n\n\nRegister for this webinar.

SUMMARY:The Librarian's Secret Weapon: WorldCat for Difficult Legal Research Webinar
DESCRIPTION:When legal research takes you beyond Westlaw\, Lexis\, and other familiar legal databases\, where do you go next? WorldCat Discovery can help you uncover books\, historical materials\, foreign and comparative law sources\, older editions\, and other hard-to-find resources that may not surface in a traditional legal research workflow. \n\n\n\nIn this 30-minute webinar\, we’ll explore four common research challenges and demonstrate how WorldCat Discovery can help you find the source you need—including tracing older editions\, following subject headings\, researching foreign legal systems\, and locating a work from an existing citation. We’ll also look at what happens after you find it and how NYLI’s interlibrary loan service can help members obtain materials from other libraries. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re tracking down an obscure treatise\, researching the history of a legal issue\, or following a decades-old citation\, WorldCat can be a powerful tool when your usual research path runs out. \n\n\n\nRegister for this webinar.
