Wired recently published an article about the people who work behind the scenes at Facebook, blocking inappropriate material. Facebook and other social media sites have what it is referred to as a “Grandma problem.” As older people are using social media to keep in touch with their family, they might come across offensive material. Such material includes sexually explicit, racist, and criminal, such as recent images of beheadings or stolen nude pictures. The Wired article highlights an increasingly number of people hired by Facebook and others to sort through the massive amount of information and purge the inappropriate. The article points out that the work of content moderation can have a psychological toll on those who do it.
